The 31st annual Hardwood Classic
Nov 6 & 7, 2021, East Lansing, Michigan. The 31st annual Hardwood Classic was a classic hit this year, with MSU club members hosting forty-seven teams from nine different states over two days. With a wide-open field narrowing in Sunday bracket play, Wisconsin A captured 1st place over Marquette A in the final of Division 1, and Marquette B downed Ohio State in the Division 2 final to complete the sweep of Hardwood.
Four MSU teams competed in the tournament, with MSU Green bettering its seed in pool play and earning an automatic Gold Bracket placement before being eliminated by tournament champ Wisconsin. MSU White fought its way into the Division 2 Silver Bracket but bowed out to Cincinnati.
In what was perhaps the most hotly contested match of the day, perennial in-house spoiler, MSU Greenhorns, stormed the court after upsetting MIVA-bound MSU Posse in the Division 2 consolation.
Over the two-day event, nearly 140 matches were played on eight courts at IM West. Several matches, including the finals of Division 1, were student-broadcast on MCV-TV and can be seen on YouTube.
Along with most schools in attendance, MSU anticipates playing a full season of MIVA and NCVF competition beginning on January 1. The Spartans will host its annual Holiday Classic in early December, welcoming alumni and friends to a fund-raising tournament for the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
The MSU Men’s Volleyball Club extends their appreciation to all the teams, officials, fans and staff who made this year’s tournament possible. The Spartans look forward to welcoming everyone “Back to the Hardwood” in 2022!
